RHODE ISLAND RENEWABLE ENERGY STANDARD
The Rhode Island Renewable Energy Standard Act of 2004 requires that any supplier providing electricity to a Rhode Island consumer supply a specific percentage of its electricity from renewable resources. Suppliers meet this requirement by purchasing NEPOOL GIS certificates or by making an alternative compliance payment to the state’s Renewable Energy Development Fund.
The table below shows annual target percentages with the minimum percentages that can come from either new or existing renewable energy resources.

- Hydroelectric
- Biomass (subject to eligible fuel sources and compliance with air permits)
- Fuel cells (using renewable resource)
Many Community Choice Aggregation Programs offer products that exceed the RI RES Obligations. Where such products are offered, the product description on the Program’s website page will display the percentage and the type (e.g., New RES) of “voluntary” renewable energy resources acquired over and above the RI RES.
